Chapter Six

Joel stared at the clothes hanging in his closet. What did one wear on the first date with their fiancé?

He groaned. “This is stupid.”

Something smacked against the back of his head, and he turned to glare at Levi, who was stretched out on his bed blowing raspberries on Evan’s stomach. The thankfully clean diaper he’d thrown at Joel was on the floor by Joel’s feet.

“You have to stop being so negative. I think it’s sweet that Eddie wants to take you out on a date before you get married.”

It was sweet, albeit weird. They were doing things the wrong way around, but Joel was glad Eddie had thought about the date. He just wasn’t sure how to behave. The only date he could remember going on had been years before when he was a teenager, and it had been awkward as hell. Joel didn’t want the night to be awkward. He wanted Eddie to see him as a man he could build a life with, not as a fumbling idiot.

Evan gurgled, and Joel smiled down at him. “Maybe I should just cancel.”

“Don’t you dare. He’s trying to do something nice for you.”

“He doesn’t have to.” It wasn’t like any other man Joel might have married would have.

“That’s how he is, Joel. He’s a nice guy. He knows you’re not happy about this, whatever you told him.”

“Neither of us have a choice.”

“But you do. You can go into this thinking you’re both forced to get married, or you can make the best of it. You can date Eddie and maybe fall in love with him.” Levi arched a brow. “If you’re not already.”

“Can we not talk about that?”

“For now. Want to talk about the wedding instead?”

“Not really.”

For some reason, Levi had volunteered to organize Joel and Eddie’s wedding. Along with their dad and Dimitri’s father, they’d decided to hold it here, in the house where Joel and Levi had grown up. It was too cold to have it outside, but the house was big enough, and Joel didn’t want dozens of people there. His family and Eddie’s would be enough. Besides, they didn’t have the time to do something big. He’d be twenty-five in a couple of weeks, and they had to hurry. Levi only had another week to get everything together.

“You used to be fun, Joel, at least when you managed to get your nose out of those dusty books of yours.”

Joel rolled his eyes. He leaned down and took Evan, grinning at him. Evan tried to catch Joel’s nose, or maybe he was just flailing his arm. Joel wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter.

“I have something for you,” Levi said.

He got off the bed and rooted through Evan’s bag. Joel watched him warily. Levi meant well, but he was a bit crazy, and having Dimitri to enable him in his life didn’t help. He’d kept a low profile before, but he didn’t have to anymore, and that meant he usually said everything that passed through his mind.

“Here.”

Joel looked at the things Levi was handing him and covered Evan’s eyes.
